Paraguayan President Santiago Peña did not attend the Senate session in person on Friday, Nov. 6, as lawmakers considered whether to impeach him. Instead, he sent attorneys Ricardo Preda and Adolfo Ferreiro to represent him. Both addressed senators during the session.

The proceedings are unfolding amid a banking crisis linked to the failure of Banco Ueno, described as the country’s largest digital bank. The Senate was set to decide whether to move forward with Peña’s removal from office.

Peña’s defense had asked Congress for an additional 72 hours to prepare and submit its response to the impeachment case. Lawmakers rejected the request, leaving the process to proceed on the existing schedule.

A group of 35 lawmakers filed the impeachment petition on Thursday, Nov. 5. The Chamber of Deputies unanimously approved opening the process, with 78 votes, and sent the case to the Senate for consideration.

Peña had also submitted a resignation, but Parliament did not consider it because there were not enough members present to establish a quorum. The Senate session on Friday took place as the impeachment process continued.
